[The following quote is from historylink.org: "The Golden Potlatch festival was organized by a carnival association of civic clubs hoping to continue the visibility of Seattle after the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition of 1909. U.S. Navy ships visited Seattle along with an airplane piloted by Lt. Eugene Ely, the first pilot to take off and land on a ship. Other events included a race by automobiles up Queen Anne Hill along Taylor Avenue N, and a reenactment of the arrival of the Portland with costumed miners carrying replica sacks of gold. Seattle's Potlatch continued only until the beginning of World War I in 1914."]

["...the 1913 Golden Potlatch staged three hydroplane races off Madrona Park: a 15 mile race for 16-footers, a 20 mile contest for 26 footers and a 30 mile free for all."]  Home then down to see parade. In Portland
Left on 'Breakwater' for Marshfield [present day Coos Bay, Oregon].  Good day but lost my supper. Not sick at all but could have been better.  Columbia Bar  [the mouth of the Columbia River]  rather rough.  Many people pretty sick.  Saw Gooderham before boat left.  Got good stateroom and lower Berth.

[Quote from Wikipedia: "... Prior to around 1915, The Coos region was largely isolated from the rest of Oregon due to difficulties in crossing the Coast Range and fording rivers, and the Pacific Ocean was used to link people to other areas..."]
