July 20 to July 31, 1913


Sunday, July 20
At Bandon, Ore    Foggy
Woke up on board the "Breakwater," very foggy and boat waited few hours before going across Marshfield Bar.  Marshfield [today is named Coos Bay] nice little town.  Got in abt 3 P.M. & left on train for Coquille, then from Cedar Point to Bandon by River Boat.  Got there abt. 9:40 P.M.

Monday, July 21
At Bandon
Loafing around Town stopped at Gallier Hotel.  Took trip up river on boat to Coquille to see abt baggage. Also out on Jetty looking at Sea.

Tuesday, July 22
Fine
At Bandon
Around town getting things ready for trip South. Met a wireless fiend Bingham and went to Movies.

Wednesday, July 23
Fair    Rain
Left Bandon by stage for Gold Beach at 7:30 A.M. had big load 1500#.  Had dinner at Langlois Hotel and put up for night at Knapp Hotel at Port Orford which is a pretty little place.

Thursday, July 24
Rain   fog
On stage all day from Port Orford to Wedderburn. [Wedderburn is on the north side of the Rogue River where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. It lies about 26.5 miles from Port Orford, on the present day coastal highway.]  Sloppy trip & heavy load.  Arrived at Bay View Hotel at 6:45  P.M.  Run across man with E.M.F. in trouble tried to help him out.  Not enough time. Had to leave. 

Friday, July 25
Foggy
At Gold Beach.  Got stuff across Rogue River.  Put up at "The Breakers."  Loafed around all day getting ready to go to mountains.  Turn in abt 9:15.  Good grub.  Had breakfast at Bay View Hotel. 

Saturday, July 26
Fine
At Gold Beach. Over across river to Wedderburn abt. pack saddles.  Down to Gold mine and beach.  Loafed around also took nap.  Dance here but didn't go.  Played Crib [Cribbage, a card game] and Turned in at 11:00 P.M.  Very nice day. Stars out in evening.

Sunday, July 27
Fine
At Gold Beach. 
Sunday allright.  Took walk down to Gold mine with Bookwaller.  Back in time for dinner.  Then for walk with Dr. Stockwell around hills. down on beach etc.  Turn in 9 P.M. Eats are fine here.

Monday, July 28
Fine
At Gold Beach
Across Rogue River to get pack sack.  Helped man with his launch engine.  Monkeyed around till dinner then helped carry boxes from store to bank. Went for walk after supper.  Turn in 10:P.M.

Tuesday, July 29
Clear   - warm
Left Gold Beach with pack mule for hills.  Seran, Turner & Miller in Party. Hiked abt 10 miles and camped on stream abt 2 miles from Stack Peak.  Was tired as Dickens and did not sleep very well.  Had coffee, bacon, biscuits for supper.  Turned in at 8 P.M.

Wednesday, July 30
Clear, warm. Fine
Left camp near Stack Peak at 8 A.M. Hiked to top of Stack Peak. Went without lunch and finally arrived at Snow Camp 5:45 P.M.  Day warm and very hard hike. Must have been 15 miles.  Had tea, Biscuits, Beans for supper.  Tasted good too.  Turn in abt 9 P.M.

Thursday, July 31
Clear - warm.  Foggy Southward.
At Camp near Craggies. Started from camp at Snow Camp. Hiked to Windy Valley, Met Fred Lallimand at Camp had meal there.  Venison too.  Then hiked toward Craggy Peak.  Pretty tough going.  Put up tent had supper.  Turn in 8:15 P.M.

Sunday, July 13
Rain
At Index. Up early and at work on reservoir.  Worked awhile then stuck around inside while it rained. 

Monday, July 14
Fair
Weather cleared and we worked at reservoir.  Had 3 men with us and finished by 5 P.M.  The train was late and we took it for Seattle at 8:45 P.M. arriving at 11:30 P.M. getting home at 12:10 A.M.

Tuesday, July 15
Fair
Slept late of course.  Out canoeing with G. had good time.

Wednesday, July 16
Fine
Up pretty late, over to G.N.M. then down town with him.  Had dinner at  white lunch. 
Up to Bon Marché saw Panama Canal Exhibit.  Saw Huey out for swim.  Up to G then down to see parade.  Potlatch

Thursday, July 17

Up at 9:30 then out to lake to see boat races. ["...the 1913 Golden Potlatch staged three hydroplane races off Madrona Park: a 15 mile race for 16-footers, a 20 mile contest for 26 footers and a 30 mile free for all."]  Home then down to see parade. Home agn. Up to G then down to Empress. Bum around then home in at 12:45 P.M. [A.M.]

Friday, July 18
Fine.  Hot.
Up somewhat late. Got things ready and left for Portland on 11:30 Shasta Limited.  Arrived Portland 5:30 P.M.  up to look for Gooderham, missed him.  Tried 4 times. Stopped at Portland Hotel.  Band Concert etc.



Saturday, July 19
Fine
In Portland 
Left on 'Breakwater' for Marshfield [present day Coos Bay, Oregon].  Good day but lost my supper. Not sick at all but could have been better.  Columbia Bar  [the mouth of the Columbia River]  rather rough.  Many people pretty sick.  Saw Gooderham before boat left.  Got good stateroom and lower Berth.

Sunday, July 6
--Very Bad--
Up abt 10:30 A.M. loafed around home till 4 P.M. Then up to G's.  Over to Schotle's then back to 612. Home 11:15 P.M.

Monday, July 7
Fair
Out to Ballard morning worked in office afternoon @ 200 Burke Bldg. Off at 4 P.M. ordered suit.  Home 6 P.M. also got shoes.  Dell called up.  Saw Harry Barden. Turn in 10:45 P.M.  


Tuesday, July 8
Fair
Left Seattle at 8 A.M. for Port Madison [Bainbridge Island west of Seattle in Puget Sound].  Worked at Point Monroe then over to Kingston.  Took hike up beach with Seran in evening. Turn in aboard The Ramona [probably a steam launch] at 9 P.M.

Wednesday, July 9
Rotten
Worked at Kingston till noon.  Took launch for Seattle.  Arrive 3 P.M.  Packed boxes then got suit, hat, etc.  Out to dance at Theta Chi House wi G. Had good time. Home 1:30 A.M.

Thursday, July 10 
Fair
Out to Ballard, paid for launch hire.  Worked in office at little on map.  Got paid off and thru at 3 P.M. Up to G.N.M. home 7:30 P.M. Turn in early. 

Friday, July 11
Fine
Up to G.N.M. down Town bumming around.  Had dinner at Marion Cafe. Out canoeing with Huey.  Saw G going to Hunt's Club dance.  Home 10:30 P.M.  Fixed hole in canoe with roof dope.

Saturday, July 12
Fair
Left at 9:00 A.M. for Index.  Got there at 11:30 A.M.  Raining like the dickens.  Met school maa'ms at Bush House.  Was to tea party had good time. Only man among 7 ladies.
