August 24 to September 13, 1913


Sunday, August 24
Warm  - clear.  Foggy in South
At Camp at Clarke's place.  Washed up & also duds.  Took horse back ride also tumble.   Fellows got 2nd deer.  Around camp fire eve. Up to Hardenbrook's to telephone to Crescent City.  Turn in 9:30 P.M.

Monday, August 25
Foggy morning, warm after noon.  
Left Clarke's place at 8:30 A.M. Had lunch at Bale's Mail box.  Camped for night at Ovis Ransom's barn.  Load very heavy & tired horses quickly.  Made 14 miles.  Turn in in hay loft at 9 P.M.

Tuesday, August 26
Fair, warm, clear.
Left camp at Ovis Ransom's Barn at 7:45 A.M.  Got to Wilson cabin at 9:00 A.M.  left with 1 horse for Bosley [Butte] at 9:30 A.M.  Got there abt 10:30.  Cut poles skinned them, had lunch & put up signal by 4 P.M.  Returned to camp at 4:45.  Had supper at 6:30 P.M.

Wednesday, August 27
Hot Clear.  100 in shade.  
Left camp at Wilson Cabin for Moore's Ranch at 7:40 A.M.  Traveled abt 14 miles to Chetco River had lunch & swim.  After dinner made short hike to Moore's place.  Camped for night.  Lightening in distance.  Turn in 9 P.M. Serenade on School Ma'am [I think 'schoolmarm' is his harmonica] "Pretty slow I guess"

Thursday, August 28
Cloudy  -  Warm  -  Hazy
Left camp at Moore's ranch at 7:50 A.M. for Pollywog Butte. [I think this is east of the Chetco River.] Got to Quail Prairie at 10:30 A.M.  Rested horses 1 1/2 hrs.  Got to Pollywog at 2 P.M.  Camped at spring at East side of Pollywog.  Sent Blagden back to Quail Prairie with horses.  Turn in 9 P.M.

Friday, August 29
Fair - clear - warm
Left camp at Pollywog at 7:30 A.M. to build [here he drew a triangle with a dot in the middle]
at butte south of Pollywog.  Cleared brush & cut 10 big trees.  Got signal up by 3:30 P.M. and went back to camp for dinner.  Abt 1/4 acre of brush cleared.  Good day's work.  Bales got 13 rattles from snake.  Turn in 9:P.M.

Saturday, August 30
Warm  - Hazy
Left camp at Pollywog at 9:30 A.M. after horses came from Quail Prairie.  Got to Moore's ranch at 1:30 P.M. Had lunch left at 3 P.M. for Peini's Place for camp.  Total distance 16 miles.  Had swell supper, biscuits, in Peini's stove, rice, spuds, coffee, bacon, etc.  104 in shade at Moore's.  Turn in 9: P.M. loaf around fire. 

Sunday, August 31
Camped at Henry Peini's for Sunday.  Up abt 7: A.M. had breakfast then went for swim in Chetco.  Bales, Blagden, Bob & Myself.  Fine swim.  Picked a gallon of Huckleberries & Red made 4 pies.  Each had 1/2 pie a piece, some pie.  Washed duds.  Great stuff.  Around fire eve.

Monday, September 1
Warm - Fair - Clear.
Left Peini's Place at 7:30 A.M. and hiked to Harbor - 17 miles by1 P.M. Got accts straightened up.  Went with bunch across river [Chetco] to Brookins [he wrote it without the 'g']. Came back and helped catch 171 fish. Got one for ourselves.  Great bunch when all together. Got picture taken too. 

Tuesday, September 2
Rain Stormy - something fierce.
Left Harbor at 8:15 A.M. with Seran & Bob Miller for Pistol River on way to Gold Beach.  2 saddle horses & mule.  Hiked 1 1/2 hrs with 25# pack on my back, stopped for lunch at Colgroves.  Met Miss Borill again.  Very wet.  Left again for river & got there at 7:30 P.M.  Had deuce of a time, packed mule twice, & soaked thru.  Worst trip I ever had. Abt 24 miles. Fine feed at Lawrence's.

Wednesday, September 3
Rain. Very stormy  -  Fierce.
At Lawrence's on Pistol River.  Loafed around reading all day.  Wrote 2 letters.  Borill party came in from Colgroves. Spent nice evening chatting with Miss Borill.  Turn in 8:45 P.M.

Thursday, September 4
Rain  -  Warmer  - Misty
At Lawrence's morning.  Left at 1:30 P.M. for Gold Beach with Bob, Seran, Borills & driver. 7 saddle horses.  Fairly wet but had fine time riding with Miss Borill.  Arrived Gold Beach at 4:30 P.M. pretty wet but in good humor.  Changed clothes & had supper.  Feeling fine.  Sky cleared. Eve at hotel.  Turn in 10:30 P.M.

Friday, September 5
Cool  -  Fair  -  Clear
At Gold Beach.  Across river on errand.  Made Aparejos [a packsaddle of stuffed leather or canvas].
Loafed around some.  Had a great time at dinner with Borills & Seran. "Astrology."  Played 3 games of pool with H.A. Shaved off whiskers.  Turn in 9:30 P.M.

Saturday, September 6
Fair   - warmer - clear.
At Gold Beach, adjusting instruments & getting ready for trip to Crescent City.  Played 2 games pool & Seran went to Marshfield after screw for Theodolite [A surveying instrument with a rotating telescope for measuring horizontal and vertical angles].  Turn in 11: P.M.

Sunday, September 7
Fair - Warmer - Clear.
Sunday, loafed around hotel writing letters etc. Seran didn't get away in the morn. Took pictures with Miss Borill & then went down to sand spit & watched Rustler "go out" with Mrs. & Miss B.  At supper finished up the watermelon in fine shape. Turn in 9 P.M.

Monday, September 8
Misty - Fair Afternoon.
Left Gold Beach for Crescent City with Al. Lawrence & C. & G.S. [Coast and Geodetic Survey]  Outfit.  At 2 P.M. arrived at Pistol River [abt 10 miles] & spent night. Met Mr. & Mrs. Miller there.  Turn in 9 P.M.

Tuesday, September 9
Fair  -  Clear.
Left Lawrence's Place at 7 A.M. for C.C. [Crescent City]  had lunch on road and spent night at Hotel Plaisted at Smith River. [abt 28 miles] Turn in at 8 P.M.

Wednesday, September 10
Fair  -  Warm
Left Smith River and Arrived at Crescent City [abt 16 miles]. Got room at Bay Hotel for outfit. 
Walked around town.  Met Breen and City Engineer Cooper.  Left on Grant's Pass Stage at 5 P.M. and drove all night. 

Changed horses 6 times. 

Thursday, September 11
Arrived Waldo for breakfast and Kerby for dinner. [There is a history museum at Kerby today that is worth visiting. The stagecoach probably stopped at this point on what is now called the Redwood Highway.] 
   Got a 2 hr. nap, that's all, at the hotel.  Left at 1 P.M. for Grant's Pass and arrived about 4:30 P.M.  Put up at Josephine Hotel and got cleaned up a bit.  Seems to be good little town.  Feeling tired and sleepy. [In Grants Pass there is a mural of the old Josephine Hotel exactly where it stood back then.]
 



Friday, September 12
Fair - Warm.
At Grant's Pass, Ore.  Took train for Portland.  Warm day but traveling was good.  Arrived in Portland at 10:15 P.M.  Met Mr. Lewis going to Seattle.  Took sleeper to Seattle. Rather tired. Turned in at 11 P.M.

Saturday, September 13
Cloudy, very little rain.  
At Seattle.  Arrived from Portland at 6:15 A.M. Home by 7 A.M.  Up to Baker's, got car. Up to 612 - then to G.N.M. to Garage.  Down town with mama.  Home.  Out with Amory & Babe.  At Baker's for supper out with Louise, to Clemmer saw Dell.  Babe wi Flo. Bell.  Home 10:30 P.M.

Sunday, August 17
Fair - Warm - Foggy Morn.
Sunday. Loafed around camp all day.  Fellows on hunt but got no game.  Took cold bath.  Put up canvas stretcher. Not much doing.  Fine day.  At camp near Craggy's.  Turn in 9:30 P.M.

Monday, August 18
Fair  -  Warm  - Clear
Left camp about 8 A.M. and made trail to top of Craggy.  Took poles up to station and peeled them. Went without dinner and back at 3:30 P.M.  Had supper at 4:30 P.M. Loafed around camp.  Hays nearly got deer with colt automatic near camp.  Turn in abt 9:00 P.M.

Tuesday, August 19
Fair  -  Cold  - Little Hazy
Went up to top of Craggy and put up signal. Got it done by 2 P.M. came down and had supper at 5 P.M. Loafed around camp all eve. tying knots in rope.  Turn in abt 9:30 P.M.

Wednesday, August 20 
Fair warm.  Hazy in distance
Left camp at Craggies at 7:45.  Got to Windy Valley by noon.  Had dinner then left for Snow Camp at 3 P.M.  Met 7 fellows on hunting trip.  Game Warden too. Caught Cow got milk. Very hot trip, abt. 10 miles.  Turn in 9:30 P.M.

Thursday, August 21
At Gold Beach
Fair  -Hot. Hazy in distance.
Left Snow Camp at 7:45 A.M. for Gold Beach.  Got here at 5 P.M.  25 miles with 4 pack horses. Pitched camp on beach.  Went to Medicine Show.  Dance after with Mrs. Lampson.  Turn in 11:30 P.M.

Friday, August 22
Fair   Clear
At Camp at Gold Beach on beach.  Around town all day getting things ready for trip South.  Seran called up from Smith River. Went to show eve. It was great  Book agent stunt.  Turn in at 10:45 P.M.

Saturday, August 23
Fair  -  Warm  -  Clear
Left Gold Beach at 8 A.M. for Bosley Butte with Demeritt.  Had lunch at Meyer Creek and arrived at Clarke's place at 5 P.M.  Pitched camp in fine shape.  Met other travelers here.  Turn in 9:30 P.M.

Sunday, August 10
Fair  -  Cool   - Foggy
At Breakers Hotel, Gold Beach.  
Loafed around all morning reading, writing letters etc.  Down watching  "Tramp" [Tramp Steamer] go over bar [The "bar" is a gravely or sandy ridge under water caused by tides, usually at the point where a river meets the ocean.] with Bales.  Took row boat out.  Shot Colt Automatic.  Played Pool.  Getting ready.  Turn in 10:00 P.M.

Monday, August 11
Fair  - Foggy
Worked around getting things ready for trip.  Got grub & cooking outfit.  Played 2 games of pool.  Turn in 10:00 P.M.

Tuesday, August 12
Fair  -  Cool  -  Foggy.
At Gold Beach.  Still getting things ready for trip.  Played 2 games of Pool.  Went across river with Blagden.  Loafing around Hotel.  Reading eve.  Turn in 10:30.  

Wednesday, August 13
At Gold Beach.  Fair Foggy.  
Left at 9:15 A.M. with 5 men & Pack train, 4 horses for Stack Peak. Arrived at Camp just below at 3 P.M. Pitched Camp & had supper.  Rice, Coffee, bacon, potatoes, bread.  fine stuff.  Put up 6 x 8 "A" tents. Up to top of Stack with Hays, Childers & Bob got a buck.  Skinned him Turned in abt 10 P.M.  
[This is just an anonymous person with his dinner, but I think it is probably what our fellow looked like in August of 1913.]

Thursday, August 14
Fair  - Foggy in Morning
At Camp at Stack.  Put up Signal on Stack, was thru by 11:30. Had dinner & left for Alder Springs at 2:30.  Arrived Alder Springs 4:30.  Camped for night.  Had buck meat all the time.  Very good. 

Friday, August 15
Fair - Clear - Warm
Left camp at Alder Springs at 8:30.  Arrived Windy Valley 12:30. Had dinner. Left at 3 P.M. with Jantzen for Alder Camp.  Arrived 6:30 P.M.  Lost trail twice.  Had good supper rather late.  Saw 3 or 4 deer on way. Having buck meat all the time. Turn in at 10:00 P.M.

Saturday, August 16
Fair - Clear - Foggy Eve
Cut two trails from Fred's Camp.  One to trail on ridge other to Camp below Craggy's.  Move Camp from Fred's Camp over to camp below Craggys. Turn in at 8:15 P.M.  Had venison stew, peaches etc. fine feed.

August 1 to August 9, 1913


Friday, August 1
Fog & Rain
Camp at Fred's Camp near Craggys.  Left camp abt 6:45 for Craggy Peak.  Fred, Seran & Miller.  Left Turner in camp.  Got to top of peak abt. 10:00.  Found station all right. Came down in hurry. Broke camp at 2:30 and hiked back to Windy Valley.  Mule ran away.  Had venison stew. in @ 9 P.M.

Saturday, August 2
Sun - Fair
Left Fred Lallimand's Place abt 9 A.M. for Bosley Peak.  Fred took us pt. way.  Got to Pistol River OK. Then in getting up bank Mule lost hold. Fell down bank end over end and lodged in River. Unpacked and found mule ok.  Perhaps.  Tried to make top of ridge from Pistol R. but cut 1/2 mile of trail and Turned back acct dark.  Camp in bed of Pistol R. Had 3 Trout for supper. Had venison for breakfast. 












Mules were often used for pack animals in 1913.



Sunday, August 3
Foggy
Left camp on Pistol River abt 7 A.M. and hiked toward Gold Beach.  Long hill up from River and long hike.  Had dinner at Snow Camp Prairie and put up for night at Cedar Camp.   All abt. 17 miles. turned in at 8 P.M.

Monday, August 4
Foggy in hills, clear at Gold Beach
Left Camp at Cedar Camp at 7 A.M. on hike to Gold Beach.  Got to Gold Beach at 12M.  Mule got lost. Hunters brought him down hill.  Had big meal at Hotel Breakers. got cleaned up and loafed around afternoon.  Hike abt 16 miles. 

Tuesday, August 5
Fair   Clear.
Took this day off for Sunday.  At Breakers Hotel.  Getting ready for 4 day trip to Bosley Mt. [Butte?]  Wrote cards & letter to G.N.M. Not much doing. Fine feed tho.  Had Venison for Breakfast.  Turn in 9 P.M.

Wednesday, August 6
Fair  - Clear - Warm
Left Gold Beach at 9:30 A.M. for Bosley Mt. with Turner & three horses.  Camped at Meyer Creek at noon.  At Clarke's Place at night. Abt. 20 mile trip.  Very pretty trip.  Picked blackberries for supper made apple sauce for morning.  

Thursday, August 7
Fair - Warm - Clear, strong NW wind
Left camp at Clarke's Place at 7:00 A.M.  Took Bales' Trail and got to Wilson's cabin at 1 P.M.  Had lunch & got to top of Bosley at abt. 3:30.  Returned to camp at 5:30 P.M.  Had very nice ride. fine view of Ocean and Coast.  Getting used to riding.  Can sit down to meals now.  Camp at Wilson's.

Friday, August 8
Warm - Fair - Smokey
Left camp at Wilson's Place at 7:45 for Gold Beach.  Afternoon stopped again at Clarke's Place for lunch.  Camped for night along road about 1 1/2 miles N of Pistol R. Bridge. Turned in at 9 P.M.

Saturday, August 9
Fair   - Foggy  Morn.
Left camp near Pistol River at 7:30 A.M. for Gold Beach.  Arrived Gold Beach 11:30 A.M.  Had dinner Breakers.  Got stufff up from river to storeroom.  Loafed around all afternoon.  Wrote letters. Turn in abt. 9:00 P.M.

At Bandon, Ore    Foggy
Woke up on board the "Breakwater," very foggy and boat waited few hours before going across Marshfield Bar.  Marshfield [today is named Coos Bay] nice little town.  Got in abt 3 P.M. & left on train for Coquille, then from Cedar Point to Bandon by River Boat.  Got there abt. 9:40 P.M.

Monday, July 21
At Bandon
Loafing around Town stopped at Gallier Hotel.  Took trip up river on boat to Coquille to see abt baggage. Also out on Jetty looking at Sea.

Tuesday, July 22
Fine
At Bandon
Around town getting things ready for trip South. Met a wireless fiend Bingham and went to Movies.

Wednesday, July 23
Fair    Rain
Left Bandon by stage for Gold Beach at 7:30 A.M. had big load 1500#.  Had dinner at Langlois Hotel and put up for night at Knapp Hotel at Port Orford which is a pretty little place.

Thursday, July 24
Rain   fog
On stage all day from Port Orford to Wedderburn. [Wedderburn is on the north side of the Rogue River where it flows into the Pacific Ocean. It lies about 26.5 miles from Port Orford, on the present day coastal highway.]  Sloppy trip & heavy load.  Arrived at Bay View Hotel at 6:45  P.M.  Run across man with E.M.F. in trouble tried to help him out.  Not enough time. Had to leave. 

Friday, July 25
Foggy
At Gold Beach.  Got stuff across Rogue River.  Put up at "The Breakers."  Loafed around all day getting ready to go to mountains.  Turn in abt 9:15.  Good grub.  Had breakfast at Bay View Hotel. 

Saturday, July 26
Fine
At Gold Beach. Over across river to Wedderburn abt. pack saddles.  Down to Gold mine and beach.  Loafed around also took nap.  Dance here but didn't go.  Played Crib [Cribbage, a card game] and Turned in at 11:00 P.M.  Very nice day. Stars out in evening.

Sunday, July 27
Fine
At Gold Beach. 
Sunday allright.  Took walk down to Gold mine with Bookwaller.  Back in time for dinner.  Then for walk with Dr. Stockwell around hills. down on beach etc.  Turn in 9 P.M. Eats are fine here.

Monday, July 28
Fine
At Gold Beach
Across Rogue River to get pack sack.  Helped man with his launch engine.  Monkeyed around till dinner then helped carry boxes from store to bank. Went for walk after supper.  Turn in 10:P.M.

Tuesday, July 29
Clear   - warm
Left Gold Beach with pack mule for hills.  Seran, Turner & Miller in Party. Hiked abt 10 miles and camped on stream abt 2 miles from Stack Peak.  Was tired as Dickens and did not sleep very well.  Had coffee, bacon, biscuits for supper.  Turned in at 8 P.M.

Wednesday, July 30
Clear, warm. Fine
Left camp near Stack Peak at 8 A.M. Hiked to top of Stack Peak. Went without lunch and finally arrived at Snow Camp 5:45 P.M.  Day warm and very hard hike. Must have been 15 miles.  Had tea, Biscuits, Beans for supper.  Tasted good too.  Turn in abt 9 P.M.

Thursday, July 31
Clear - warm.  Foggy Southward.
At Camp near Craggies. Started from camp at Snow Camp. Hiked to Windy Valley, Met Fred Lallimand at Camp had meal there.  Venison too.  Then hiked toward Craggy Peak.  Pretty tough going.  Put up tent had supper.  Turn in 8:15 P.M.

At Index. Up early and at work on reservoir.  Worked awhile then stuck around inside while it rained. 

Monday, July 14
Fair
Weather cleared and we worked at reservoir.  Had 3 men with us and finished by 5 P.M.  The train was late and we took it for Seattle at 8:45 P.M. arriving at 11:30 P.M. getting home at 12:10 A.M.

Tuesday, July 15
Fair
Slept late of course.  Out canoeing with G. had good time.

Wednesday, July 16
Fine
Up pretty late, over to G.N.M. then down town with him.  Had dinner at  white lunch. 
Up to Bon Marché saw Panama Canal Exhibit.  Saw Huey out for swim.  Up to G then down to see parade.  Potlatch

Up at 9:30 then out to lake to see boat races. ["...the 1913 Golden Potlatch staged three hydroplane races off Madrona Park: a 15 mile race for 16-footers, a 20 mile contest for 26 footers and a 30 mile free for all."]  Home then down to see parade. Home agn. Up to G then down to Empress. Bum around then home in at 12:45 P.M. [A.M.]

Friday, July 18
Fine.  Hot.
Up somewhat late. Got things ready and left for Portland on 11:30 Shasta Limited.  Arrived Portland 5:30 P.M.  up to look for Gooderham, missed him.  Tried 4 times. Stopped at Portland Hotel.  Band Concert etc.



Saturday, July 19
Fine
In Portland 
Left on 'Breakwater' for Marshfield [present day Coos Bay, Oregon].  Good day but lost my supper. Not sick at all but could have been better.  Columbia Bar  [the mouth of the Columbia River]  rather rough.  Many people pretty sick.  Saw Gooderham before boat left.  Got good stateroom and lower Berth.

Up abt 10:30 A.M. loafed around home till 4 P.M. Then up to G's.  Over to Schotle's then back to 612. Home 11:15 P.M.

Monday, July 7
Fair
Out to Ballard morning worked in office afternoon @ 200 Burke Bldg. Off at 4 P.M. ordered suit.  Home 6 P.M. also got shoes.  Dell called up.  Saw Harry Barden. Turn in 10:45 P.M.  


Tuesday, July 8
Fair
Left Seattle at 8 A.M. for Port Madison [Bainbridge Island west of Seattle in Puget Sound].  Worked at Point Monroe then over to Kingston.  Took hike up beach with Seran in evening. Turn in aboard The Ramona [probably a steam launch] at 9 P.M.

Wednesday, July 9
Rotten
Worked at Kingston till noon.  Took launch for Seattle.  Arrive 3 P.M.  Packed boxes then got suit, hat, etc.  Out to dance at Theta Chi House wi G. Had good time. Home 1:30 A.M.

Thursday, July 10 
Fair
Out to Ballard, paid for launch hire.  Worked in office at little on map.  Got paid off and thru at 3 P.M. Up to G.N.M. home 7:30 P.M. Turn in early. 

Friday, July 11
Fine
Up to G.N.M. down Town bumming around.  Had dinner at Marion Cafe. Out canoeing with Huey.  Saw G going to Hunt's Club dance.  Home 10:30 P.M.  Fixed hole in canoe with roof dope.

Saturday, July 12
Fair
Left at 9:00 A.M. for Index.  Got there at 11:30 A.M.  Raining like the dickens.  Met school maa'ms at Bush House.  Was to tea party had good time. Only man among 7 ladies.
